Description
As the Hanrahan Road Landfill reaches the later stages of its life managing landfill gas becomes one of the most important parts of safely closing and rehabilitating the site. Landfill gas is created by naturally occurring microbes as waste rots. It contains methane, a greenhouse gas that needs to be carefully managed. As parts of the landfill are progressively capped gas can become trapped underground. New infrastructure will capture the gas using a network of wells and pipework, directing it to a flare unit where it will be safely burned to convert methane into carbon dioxide.
