As a Gold Waterwise Council, the City undertakes annual reporting against a number of Corporate and Community Water Actions for potable and non-potable water consumption from our Waterwise Council Action Plan. The Waterwise Council Program, jointly run by the Water Corporation and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, supports local governments to improve water efficiency and adopt waterwise practices in their operations and communities. The recognition scheme acknowledges councils demonstrating leadership in sustainable water management, with Gold status for top-performing councils and a Platinum award for the council of the year.

Timeline of Waterwise Council Program milestones:

2015: Waterwise Aquatic Centre Action Plan developed

2016: Waterwise Council Action Plan developed

2020: Gold Waterwise Council Action Plan developed

2021: Gold Waterwise re-endorsement first achieved

2022: Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre recognised as an Platinum Aquatic Centre

2022: Waterwise Verge Rebate Program implemented

2024: ALAC 5-year report and Gold Action Plan developed

2025: New 5-year Gold Waterwise action plan to be developed

Participate in the Water Corporation Showerhead Swap program
The City has participated in the Water Corporation's Showerhead Swap program since 2018. Residents can swap their old inefficient showerhead for a new water efficient WELS 4-star rated model for free.
The City of Albany Library provides easy access for community members to swap over showerheads.
Between October 2023 - May 2024, the following was achieved:
504 Showerheads Swapped
277 Households participated
5374 Total water saving per annum (KL)*
*Annual water saving is based on 19.4KL per household
