Description
In 2021 Albany successfully transitioned to a FOGO (Food Organics & Garden Organics) kerbside collection service.
Prior to this around 30% of Albany's household food waste was food scraps and other organic material. When organic waste rots in landfill it releases methane (a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide) and moisture that creates a harmful leachate when combined with rain and condensation.
The FOGO system helps our community divert that waste from landfill and create compost instead.
